Starting this spring, the Summit Mall in South Reno will include a new branch of Renown Health. The clinic will initially provide a lab to assist in the primary care services being offered, though more services may be possible in the future. With a beginning staff of 11 employees, the clinic hopes to add 1 more physician and an additional nurse practitioner as well. This is the 12th primary care clinic owned by Renown, and the first one to open in South Reno.
Renown Health has been around in Nevada for a long time. Originally called Washoe Health System, this locally owned and not-for-profit company opened in 1862. Since those days, Renown has been on the cutting edge of technology, performing the first open heart surgery in the region in 1977, and being only the 4th in the world to perform a surgery with the da Vinci Xi in 2014. Through it all, Renown has maintained a locally owned and governed healthcare system that invests everything they make back into the programs. From 1 hospital with 40 beds in the 1800’s, Renown has grown to a system that employs 5,500 people in the health care field.
Renown Health is all about the customer. Not only are there no out-of-state shareholders to satisfy, over 150 community members serve in advisory capacities or on the Renown board. That means that the average citizen has a say in how profits are reinvested into the company and what equipment the facilities should buy. This level of customer involvement and not-for-profit business model, are a change of pace in the world of health care.
A dozen local contactors worked on the 10,000 square foot clinic that will be opening in the Summit Mall. Three full storefronts will house this primary care facility that will serve South Reno starting the spring.
