An onslaught of natural disasters hit the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico and its surrounding area’s hard in 2017. The aftermath left thousands of people heartbroken, homeless and in disbelief. Countless numbers of donations were made by many organizations, but there were also local businesses that stepped up to teh plate and offered their help and resources to rebuild its community. In Houston, Texas, after an unforgettable hit from Hurricane Harvey we had seen local business such as H-E-B Texas Grocery, Houston Food Bank and Nabors Industries immediately taking action and offer its helping hand to many effected by the devastating storm.
Nabors Industries is one of the largest oil and natural gas drillers in Houston, TX. The company contributed their time and money to help out with disaster relief efforts along the entire Gulf Coast. The chief executive officer of Nabors Industries, Tony Petrello provided his employee’s with paid time off to help out with the relief efforts. The employees proudly obliged and also raised a total of $173,622 to the Nabors Disaster Relief Fund. Tony Petrello matched the contributions and all of the funds were used to help the active participants with their relief efforts. The onsite kitchen of Nabors also profoundly contributed by preparing three hot meals each day to families in the area recovering from the storm.
The CEO of Nabors Industries has helped out Houston before, in 2006 Tony Petrello had donated a generous total of $7 million to its Texas Children’s Hospital. The donation has allowed the Texan hospital to expand its Jan and Duncan Neurological Research Institute. The research facility focuses on researching causes of neurological diseases in children and infants and is committed to find the right treatments so these children can overcome their disabilities.
Tony Petrello and his wife Cynthia, gave birth to a daughter who was born with a neurological disease called periventricular leukomalacia and they want many parents going through the same thing find relief and answers. The hospital became the world’s first research facility that strongly focused on neurological issues in children. Although he was born and raised in New Jersey, Tony Petrello has shown so much love for Houston and has made it his new home. He went to school at Yale University on a scholarship and earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics. He set up an endowment fund in loving memory of his Yale mentor who passed away in 2016.
Adam Milstein spoke at a conference in Washington D.C. hosted by the Israeli-American Council just a few months ago, and amidst all the speeches, panel discussions, interviews and dance celebrations, he said he was delighted to see certain things among the young people there. Many of them were excited not only to engage in political discussions, talk about things going on in Israel but also about how much they loved their heritage. Milstein says he’s very optimistic because of this and believes even with all the things that have happened in the modern world, the call of Israel even from past days is as strong as ever.
Adam Milstein believes that as long as Jewish-Americans and Israelis support Israel’s leaders and do so unconditionally, the nation will remain a force for good in the world. He certainly knows that not every decision they make is perfect, but if all Jews accept it as such, they will find common ground on things they do care about. He also notes how Jews throughout history have always had the ability to think outside the box and bring ideas to the table that nobody before has thought of. It’s one reason why many of them over the years have had success in business and finance and have also graduated from prestigious universities.
Adam Milstein is a graduate of the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, and also holds an MBA from the University of Southern California. He served in the battalion commanded by Ariel Sharon during his time in the Israeli Defense Forces and helped defeat Egypt in the Yom Kippur War. His professional career has consisted of managing billions in client assets in real estate and accumulating one of the largest commercial property portfolios as managing partner of Hager Pacific Properties.
Philanthropy is fundamental to everything Adam Milstein does as he’s said that it provides structure even his day-to-day business tasks, but also because it allows him to connect with other Jewish-Americans and also give them insight into events happening back in Israel. He’s been chairman of the IAC for over 10 years, and also is the co-chair of the Milstein Family Foundation with his wife Gila. The foundation is also a partner of Jerusalem University, American Society for Yad Vashem, Bizrael, Mason Hillel and Jewish International Fund.
During my research about Dick Devos, I found out that he has had a very successful career. From 1984 to 1990, he was the vice president of the Amway corporation. During the years of 1991 to 1993, he was president and CEO of the Amway Center and the Orlando Magic. Between 1993 and 2002, he was the president of the Amway corporation. He has also been on the board of the West Michigan Aviation Academy and the Willow Creek Association. From 2002 to the present time, he is the president of the Windquest group, an investment group that is based out of West Michigan. Along with being a successful businessman, I discovered that Mr. Devos and his wife Betsy have donated a lot of money to a good variety of charitable organizations.
Mr. Devos and his wife Betsy, education is very important. They have given millions of dollars to charities that make education better. They have also given money to religious organizations that include Christian schools, youth groups, faith-based charities, and a lot of parochial schools. Two of the more well-known religious organizations that they donate to is Focus on The Family and Young Life. Homeless families have benefited from their generosity by getting a place to stay and counseling. Conservative political organizations like the Republican party are also recipients of some of their charity money. They also gave fifty million dollars to jumpstart the Helen Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I also found out that the Devos have their own charitable organization.
I also have discovered that Mr. and Mrs. Devos own their charitable foundation. They started this organization in 1989 with the goal of “serving as faithful stewards” of greater society through “projects that build a strong community.” Their organization focuses on school choice, community health, the arts, and bringing new life and vitality to communities. They have also given grants to charitable organizations like Potter’s House, a Michigan Christian organization that operates two faith-based schools and West Michigan Aviation Academy, a charter school that has a focus on aviation. Their organization also gives a lot of funds to educational organizations.
Also, for the past several years, the majority of their grant money has gone to the Education Freedom Fund. The Education Freedom Fund gives children in need scholarships to private schools. They also sponsor ArtPrize which is an international art competition that takes place every year in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Other charities that they have given money to are the school outreach program Student Advancement Foundation and Safe Haven Ministries (an organization that gives shelter to women and children that are victims of domestic violence.
After learning about Mr. Devos, I have learned that even though he makes millions of dollars every year, he also gives funds to charitable organizations to improve the lives of many people. While he is making millions, he is also making the lives of many people better.
